Walking is such a natural action, something that we take for granted because we do it every day.  Many people think the only way to exercise is by running or lifting weights, but something as simple as walking can be enough to make us feel better and provide important health benefits.

According to the American Heart Association, walking and moderate physical activity for 30 minutes a day has the following health benefits:

  • Reduces the risk of coronary heart disease.
  • Improves blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
  • Improves blood lipid profile.
  • Maintains body weight and lowers the risk of obesity.
  • Enhances mental well-being.
  • Reduces the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer.
  • Reduces the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes.

 So how do you start?

Consider joining the Darien Steppers Walking Club.  They are a fun and friendly group that meet several times a week at pre-set locations and times.  Click here for more information.

At Home In Darien has several tried and true street routes you should consider walking.  They start and end at our office (same as Town Hall and the Senior Center) where Darien residents will find ample parking.  Click here for walking routes.

Additionally Darien has lovely parks so you might want to consider a nature trail or locations where you can take in beautiful scenery while getting your walking in at the same time.

Some key points before you start walking…

Talk to your doctor

Before starting any exercise routine, you should talk to your doctor for recommendations and ways to stay safe.

Start Small

Start walking at a low intensity and for a short duration and progress gradually. This will keep you motivated and safe from burn out.

Have a Plan

It is easy to get off track so make a weekly plan. It can be as simple as walking once a week, but it will help you stay motivated.

Water, Water, Water!

Water is key to feeling energized and increasing stamina while walking. Drink at least 8 glasses a day to stay hydrated.

Team Up with Someone

Again, please consider joining the Darien Steppers Walking Club, but if that doesn’t work for you, invite someone to walk with you. This will hold you accountable, keep you motivated, and make the experience more fun.

Anytime is a good time to start a walking routine.  Enjoy the wonderful benefits of getting out and moving with this low-cost, low-impact exercise.
